On August 23, 2005 Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas. Meteorologists were able to warn people and the evacuations started by the 28th of August. New Orleans was at risk with the city average elevation being six feet below sea level and being surrounded with water. The mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin issued a mandatory city evacuation. Mayor Ray Nagin also said that the Superdome would server a last resort for people who couldn't leave the city.
In the morning of August 29, the storm hit and left about 9 meters of rain. By 9 am, low lying places like the Ninth Ward and St. Bernard Parish were under water. Nearly 80% of the city had taken in some type of water. The Coast Guard rescued 34,000 people. This storm was one of the worst the world has seen and left many people without homes.
