Reading Response - A&P

My reading response it to A&P by John Updike. In this book the main character is Sammy and while reading this I found five different traits of Sammy. One trait of Sammy is that he is very childish, Sammy likes joking around with his friend who also works at the store. Sammy is very judgemental, throughout the whole story he is very judgmental of different people. Sammy also has a very vivid imaginative he thinks up different scenarios within the story. Sammy also observes everything that happens within the store. Sammy also was very impulsive at the ending by just quitting, but you could also see the ending as Sammy standing up for his beliefs.

I really liked how the author let us see everything Sammy was thinking and seeing. It was almost like we are there were Sammy is. Even though we could see everything some of the parts were very weird and creeped me out to see what was all going through is head. The setting in this book was in a A&P, which is a grocery store, in the 1960's. You could tell this was in the 60's because of how differently people talked and how cheap some of the products were compared to today's prices.

Strengths and Challenges

One of my strengths is that I can make personal connections within my writing. This strength helped me in my personal narrative and connect my life. Another strength of mine is being able to write short response to a topic. This strength helps me in other classes besides English because I use this strength in history.       One of my challenges is that I am awful with grammar. I tried to fix this challenge over the year and it improved a little bit, but I still had to practice on it and use Grammarly a lot. Another challenge of mine was researching a topic then writing about it. I really had trouble with the research project because of this challenge

LOTF Response

[Piggy:] "I don't agree with all Jack said, but with some.  'Course there isn't a beast in the forest.  How could there be?  What would a beast eat?" "Pig." "We eat pig." "Piggy!" "I got the conch!" said Piggy indignantly.  "Ralph--they ought to shut up, oughtn't they?  You shut up, you littluns!  What I mean is that I don't agree about this here fear.  Of course there isn't nothing to be afraid of in the forest.  Why--I been there myself!  You'll be talking about ghosts and such things next.  We know what goes on and if there's something wrong, there's someone to put it right." He took off his glasses and blinked at them.  The sun had gone as if the light had been turned off. [...] "Life," said Piggy expansively, "is scientific, that's what it is.  In a year or two when the war's over they'll be traveling to Mars and back.  I know there isn't no beast--not wit...
