Song Analysis: Africa by Toto

The song I choose to analyze was Africa by Toto. The songs has a lot of techniques that it uses within the song. One technique the song uses is a simile in the line "As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti," this lyrics give life to the song because when you listen you here two things that you do not usually put together. This technique adds to the overall interpretation of the song because the song is kind of boring before this point but then you hear this simile and the song brightens and gives us a poetic verse. The effect this lyric has in the song is that is gives the song life and makes the song better. This technique added to my overall interpretation of the song because it made the song more interesting and made me want to research why they used this lyric and what poetic device it used.

Another technique it uses in verse one is sibilance because it repeats and has the letter "s" a lot. This technique helped with my overall interpretation of the song because it made me see that this was not just a song Toto made but one they took time on and used poetic techniques within the song. This helped me interpret the song more by showing me that Toto wanted us to see that song had a deeper poetic meeting than most people see. The sibilance at this part in the song is right in the beginning so Toto hit us right in the beginning a poetic technique. Overall, the song Africa by Toto is a song full of poetic meaning and techniques that I would like to research more about.

Story in the Summer Week Two

I was at my house with my friend Ben. Ben and I decided to go outside and play basketball. We decided to play horse. It was a close game but I beat Ben in the game even though Ben is a lot better then me at basketball. Ben was really angry because I won by making a shot that I probably I would never make again.  Ben and I then decided to play a one on one game to twenty-one. I went up twelve to four then Ben started to make a comeback and had the game within four points. I then hit a three in which put me up on Ben fifteen to eight. I eventually one the game twenty-one to seventeen. I was happy because I usually never beat Ben in basketball because he has played it a lot longer then I did.

Strengths and Challenges

One of my strengths is that I can make personal connections within my writing. This strength helped me in my personal narrative and connect my life. Another strength of mine is being able to write short response to a topic. This strength helps me in other classes besides English because I use this strength in history.       One of my challenges is that I am awful with grammar. I tried to fix this challenge over the year and it improved a little bit, but I still had to practice on it and use Grammarly a lot. Another challenge of mine was researching a topic then writing about it. I really had trouble with the research project because of this challenge

As you get older what have you found success in?

I found success in multiple things as I got older. One subject in school I have found success in is Social Studies. I think I found success in Social Studies because I find it interesting and like learning the subject. I also found success in running cross country. When I started cross country in seventh grade I was awful at it. In eight grade I wasn't much better. But now I am breaking 11:56 in the two mile and on the ninth grade and under team. Cross country has made me a great person and I hope I do it throughout my whole high school year.     Another thing I found success in is lacrosse. Lacrosse is a really challenging sport and that what I like about it. Lacrosse always challenges me to do my best. I have found success in this by being on a varsity team and being on a select lacrosse team. These things are some of the things I have found success in.
